What is that prickly thing?

Well, if you lived in southeast Asia, this fruit would be as common to you as a Red Delicious Apple.

It’s called a Rambutan.

The edible fruit is its translucent flesh which is has a sweet, mildly acidic flavor.  Inside the flesh is a glossy brown seed which is poisonous and should not be eaten.

It is named Rambutan because of its fleshy, pliable spines.  The name is derived from the Malayan word ‘rambut’ which means hairs.
